HINGHAM 2009 - EVENT REVIEW

Postby clairemorris on Mon Jul 13, 2009 6:13 pm

Again thanks to all who came to this little event. Attendees were:-

Val & Pete Holt
Andy Charlton & Anne Bland
Malcolm, Sarah, Christina, Alistair & Byron Smith
Howard, Debbie, Callum & Lindsay Davies
Robert & Christine Tabone
Mick Noon
& Ian (moi obviously)

Most of us arrived Friday at some point to the small 3-part village green of Hingham, Norfolk. We set up our little part of the camp and settled into catching up from the previous week after a visit to the village chip shop/kebab house.

As we were in the centre of the village, as soon as you got up it was living history until you went to bed, as members of the public were walking past us all hours of the day. The public were really friendly & helpful, and were delighted to have us there. During the day we took part in some drill displays, firing displays and a parade through the village (this was all after an accident involving Roger & his horse, resulting in cuts & bruises to the horse, and a broken collar bone for Roger!)

Saturday also saw us presented to a Lt Col from the US Air Force stationed in the UK, and the American Ass Consulate - quite a day for dignitaries. We were all extremely busy during the day, with lots of very interested public asking us questions. After everyone had left the village green a hog roast was put on by the organisers and a band inthe village hall (Mini must have eaten her own body weight in hog!)

Sunday morning we chilled out for a couple of hours and got ready for the church service in St Andrews, in the village centre. We marched to the church as a society, with arms and did a guard of honour for our colours outside the church. A nice service was held inside by the Rector and the Curate of the village, which included some interesting facts for the members of the public who participated in the church service. We were there to commemorate the 200 anniversary of Lincolns birth...as Hingham as the ancestoral home of the Lincoln family, who in the 17th century sailed to America and helped found the town of Hingham, Massachusetts.

Sunday night was fun round the campfire, lots of chatting and making new comrades with only Confederate family left on site. We played a very long game of "Play your cards right", which seemed to initially baffle Mr Clark LOL!

Monday morning we were all off site by 11am.

Another good weekend gone by. Just goes to show you, you don't need to have a battle to have a good weekend!
